Terminal Geyser is a geothermal feature in Warner Valley and takes some effort to reach. The feature itself is a gigantic steam vent located in the middle of a creek, looking like a gigantic pipe burst from the earth spewing mist and steam. You can hike the 5.8-mile trail to reach this feature, or take advantage of the horseback riding option offered at Drakesbad Guest Ranch. I choose the later. The horses are beautifully cared for, and the horse wrangler, ‘Duke’ was a patient guide for both horse and rider alike. Drakesbad ensures this is a positive experience by limiting the number of guests who take the tour each day to about six riders. I lost my husband to fishing for the day so I joined a family on this ride and had an excellent time meeting new people. Several of the horses wear saddlebags, so you can carry a few items like water and snacks for the trip. Be sure to bring your camera. It starts a 2:00 in the afternoon and runs for approximately 3 hours, including prep time getting out of the stables. You’ll be at the feature for about 20 minutes max, but the time is well spent and a very memorable experience. Tip: the weather changes frequently in Warner Valley so prepare for both heat and misting rain within minutes. Neither is unbearable as you are under the forest canopy and shade most of the ride.
