While Sulphur Works is not Lassen Volcanic’s most spectacular hydrothermal attraction, it is definitely the most accessible as it is located right alongside the park’s scenic drive, about 1 mile (1.6k) north of the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center, and is the only hydrothermal area many of the park’s visitors will get to see. In comparison, the excellent Bumpass Hell, the park’s largest hydrothermal area, requires a moderately strenuous (due to elevation) 3.0 mile (4.8k) hike while most of the other hydrothermal attractions are in Warner Valley which is accessed by an unpaved road followed by 3 – 6 mile (4.8 – 9.6k) hikes. Sulphur Works consists of a steaming stream, fumaroles venting steam and volcanic gasses, and several violently boiling mudpots. On weekends during the peak season, a Park Ranger is often present providing interpretation of the site.
