Nice beach, overlooking the beautiful coastline. Enjoyable and relaxing (quiet) walk, looking for shells.
I loved sitting on a bench and just over looking the beauty. I was with my love and we just held hands and allowed the sun on our faces and watch the ocean. The splendor had me fall more in love with California
The beach is fantastic but I was hoping to walk some nature trails etc and the one trail they had was up through very dull terrain with nothing to see except the occassional lizard which were too fast to actually look at. It was less than one mile and led to the camping area. There should have been a further trail from the campsite but I gave up and walked back and left. Ver disappointed.
We love to take the dogs to Sunset beach. The coastline is beautiful and now that school's back in, quiet!
A last minute camping trip with my brother's family turned into an exciting night. While most people watch the sunset from the beach or the viewing platform, we climbed the dune behind our campsite and had an excellent view of the sunset. The kids enjoyed the beach and sand dollars. Beware of the unusually large raccoons. A pack of six came through our camp as we were sitting by the fire. They will retreat but not that far before coming back.
Location is the main thing and easy beach access. We usually go during Sept-- Oct or May early June not as crowded.
Finding sand dollars on the beach was delightful, and with the background of 100 foot sand dunes it was exceptional. Even on a Saturday we found a spot to park, but you will need to be patient. Better yet, go early and park and enjoy your day. Even the walk from the lot to the beach was stunning with a vista of crops growing to the edge of the giant dunes and the Pacific in the background with mountains. See all the beaches, but dont miss this one. A locals favorite!!!
Great beach with lots of wind and sand dollars. Be sure to understand that no dogs are allowed on or at the beach period (on or off leash). No alcohol and the beach closes at sunset. These rules are strictly enforced by Rangers. Campground is far from the beach (quite a hike) up a steep hill, and is situated next to agricultural fields, but have coin operated showers. About 30 minutes to town for supplies of meals. State Beach, so day use of $12 per car and camping at $35 a night.
My husband and I spent a few hours on the beach reading a book, but it was so cold and windy, we had to force ourselves to stay. The day use cost for the beach is $10 and it has adequate parking, the beach is clean and the bathrooms are adequate.
Went in the later afternoon, had the beach almost to ourselves! The ranger came by and gave us a friendly wave. We had a picnic, made a bonfire with the "for your fire" gift left from a previous beach-goer. Found a few sandollars, and collected the ones that had died/shells (watch out for the live ones, there are some that wash up too!) It was a beautiful sunset, a nice quiet time and we enjoyed (and will go back) to "our beach"
went there for a day trip with group of friends.when we got there around 9:30 there was plenty of room at the lower parking and free barbecue tables; by Noon parking was full though.Great beach, beautiful view, plenty of space. We had a great swim and enjoyed waves, which were not too strong today.Cons:Very fine sand gets everywhere, but there is a shower available to wash off at the end.Beach was largely occupied by seagulls - I wouldn't mind, if the remaining surface wouldn't be covered in their poop... But there is nature for you ;o) Dogs are not allowed on the beach itself [to prevent them from hunting seagulls?] - so our little had to make do between the car and space around the table by the parking. Bathrooms could be cleaner and have a few hooks to make changing less of a balancing act.Other than that - a great day trip from Silicon Valley, we will definitely be back.
Sunset State Beach is a pretty ocean state park. The sand can be soft here - so its fun to walk from the parking lot through the sand - you first climb a small hill and then go down. Expect sand to land in your shoes as you make the way through the sandy soil. Once you get to the ocean, its more solid and wonderful to walk on the beach. There is a nice picnic area here - it is by the parking lot. One area is covered (no ocean view); another area has trees and has an ocean view. There is also an excellent campground here. When we were here early July 2014, the campground was entirely full (so if you want to stay best to make reservations (through Reserve America).
Very long beach ensures you may always find a quiet spot. Most people stay near the bottom of the ramp (a 5 min walk from the parking area), so if you walk a bit further you're pretty much to yourself. Lots of families and a pleasant atmosphere. Constant patrolling by rangers so it is clean and safe.
Dogs are allowed, as well as fire in the round cans. we were able to have lots of privacy and enjoyed the beach all day. $10 in parking
Clean with great views from the parking area. A ramp all the way down to the beach made access easy.
