Shop there frequently for gifts. Very unusual gifts of high quality and for the most part, reasonably priced.
My husband and I took a Sunday drive around back roads of the Lowcountry and found ourselves in the quaint town of Walterboro, SC. After lunch, we looked for attractions open on Sunday and were pleased to find the SC Artisans Center! It is housed in two old homes in what I would classify as the downtown residential area of town and had parking right behind the building. The side veranda porch entrance was welcoming, informative and fun with sculpture, a joggling board and 3 porch kitties. Inside was lovely and filled with a plethora of art - glass, pottery, paintings, photography, books, sculpture and textiles. It was actually "Textile month" this October and there was even a community loom in the outside courtyard where anyone could add a line or two into the woven work in progress. Variety of art was good, quality of most was quite high and pricing was quite reasonable. The only staff person we saw was quick to greet us, explain the center's set up and mission, offer us coffee and turn us loose to browse. When my husband asked about a specific type of art and artist, she was quick to direct him and offered a couple of options included in the gallery. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit, made a purchase and will plan to go back again.
I got here pretty soon to closing and was a little nervous I'd be run off, but that was hardly the case. The very friendly clerk gave me a warm greeting and stayed past closing helping me out. She even recommended a few other local shops for me to try out. They had a nice selection, and I'm glad I was able to stop by.
We were staying in Walterboro overnight on our way to Charleston NC. We arrived about 3 pm and had read about this place on Trip Advisor. So many interesting crafts for sale. The buildings were from pre civil war times and we found them interesting. To keep husbands occupied while the woman looked around they had free wifi. We had a fun hour just looking around and shopping before checking into hotel. We wanted to see the doll museum that afternoon but it was closed. So make sure you call ahead to be sure they are open. My husband drives 10-12 hours a day so I would never have been able to stop and see this so I was glad I was traveling with other women and got to see it.
Located a bit off the beaten path in Downtown Walterboro, the SC Artisans Center is a great little place full of truly unique, one of a kind pieces. From ceramics and jewelry to paintings and sweet grass baskets, there is something here for everyone. The only thing you will NOT find is the "Made in China" label. As someone else mentioned, the prices are not cheap but the quality is much higher than anything you will find in a tourist shop. And again, nothing here is made in China.
There are some really good and affordable pieces at the Artisans Centre will free tea and coffee whilst you peruse the stock. Prices are at all levels and you will be certain to come away with an item to treasure. Some pieces look great from any way around, is it a horse or a frog? Go there and solve the riddle.
We had visited this center many years ago and enjoyed it, but on this visit we were disappointed in what we found. Most of the artisans crafts were VERY over-priced, in our opinion, and just run-of-the-mill; not much imagination and handicrafts. We will not be going back.
The building and grounds are exhibit one for art lovers, there is a wide variety in price, medium, and quality of items from novelty to master works made in South Carolina. The site is adjacent to downtown and the Colleton Museum and Farmer's Market and it is a comfortable site to browse, buy gifts, or unique decorations for your home.
This attraction offers a variety of gifts and art. It is a juried show, so the featured artisans may vary from year to year. Definitely a creative display of the Lowcountry.
We enjoyed the Artisan Center in Walterboro due to the wide variety of crafts available. I found several things that I would have loved to purchase but due to lack of funds, did not. It was nice to see all the artist displays. One painting of a chickens with music instruments really caught my eye but was priced at $500. Our Mapquest directions from Charleston were good but took us into a tiny driveway and then back to the parking area. Afterwards, we found that there was another entrance, which then took us to the downtown area of Walterboro. Walked the town but many of the shops were closed even though their signs said that they opened at 10 am Saturdays. It was after 10 am when we started our walk through the town. Most of the shops are antique shops so if you are looking for antiques, this is the place to come.
We were greeted by an enthusiastic artist who quickly told us this was the "Official" state artisan center. OK (so what). She also said it was a juried center; so I'm wondering who was rejected. Some nice things but really, a lot of poor quality work. Worth a visit if you are in town but no where near as impressive as the Southern Highlands Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville, NC.
Awesome merchandise, with prices for everyone. Great to see the artist displays of their hard work. Location is great from interstate 95 in the middle of the city of Walterboro.
Be sure to visit South Carolina Artisans Center while in the Walterboro/Charleston area.. Charming with over 300 SC artists represented...photographers, jewelers, potters, painters, glassworks, wood carvers, basketmakers, and on and on and on. Fabulous opportunity to pick up unique gifts or souvenirs on your way through South Carolina.
The Artisan Center is a wonderful place to visit and learn about low-country artists and crafts people. You can find unique treasures for gifts and to beautify your home. Nothing is mass produced. Many interesting original pieces and paintings. They have smaller items for thoughtful gifts and large items for indulgence. It's a wonderful place where you can support local artists.
Friendly staff and a nice place to stop on the ride. This is great stuff. Don't miss the sculptures outside.
