Swan Lake NWR is known as a hunter's destination (especially waterfowl season), but it has much to offer anyone who enjoys experiencing natural habitats, learning about ecosystems and wildlife.Although a large portion of the refuge is closed to the general public from October 31 to the end of January, there are many ways to enjoy the area. Wildlife viewing at any season will be entertaining. There are "First Friday" activities for the whole family. Bird identification workshops and feld experience are offered.Unusual bird species such as Wood Stork and Roseate Spoonbill have been found here. Trumpeter Swans are becoming wintering regulars. A really broad array of ducks, geese, grebes, gulls and terns, waders, shorebirds, and a variety of raptors are regulars in their respective seasons. The main entrance road, county road RA, on the south side of Sumner runs along a levee on the west side of shallow Swan Lake. Interior roads lead to the large, deeper Silver Lake, giving easy access to a variety of habitats. Drive it or hike it.The visitor center has modern restrooms, wildlife displays, and a gift area. The staff is very helpful. The Friends of Swan Lake NWR volunteers support or sponsor many of the activities.See the Swan Lake NWR website for a full list of activities and schedule of events.

If you like outdoor areas, this is one of the nicest drives. There is an interpretive center at the headquarters.

I went to Swan Lake with my kids in December 2011. I knew ahead of time per their website that part of the refuge was closed but decided to go anyway. There is a short hike from the visitor center to a viewing platform where we saw many waterfowl. Several bald eagles and deer were also visible. My kids enjoyed the hike and we found many animal tracks along the way. Overall the experience was good. The visitor center was open but no one came to the desk while we were in there. Also note that the town of Sumner and neighboring towns did not seem to have any restaurants. We drove about an hour after our visit before we found a small cafe to eat lunch. A picnic lunch would be good to bring. I would visit again but definitely when more of the refuge is accessible and more wildlife can be seen.
