Great library and the renovation is extremely well done. The garden area on the top floor is beautiful and I saw it in the winter. Very unique space with multiple levels to explore and it is free!
There are always great events going on here. Libraries are such an excellent resource for free entertainment.
This library, IMHO, is the best library in KC - it's LARGE and I can't imagine it not having a title you are looking for. The online service and in person service is excellent. Self check-out actually works. Reservation system works well. And, I like the location near the Plaza because it's right by several restaurants; you can grab your books and lunch all over your lunch hour easily.
My husband and I often register for the free author and guest speaker programs offered through the Kansas City Public Library. We try to attend at least one per month. The books discussed by their authors range from local sports to controversial historical topics. There is an audience Q & A session following the author's presentation. Often there is a short reception preceding the program that is also free of charge. You can sign up to receive a monthly newsletter or receive email notices. Definitely one of the best educational programs in Kansas City.
It's probably a grate library. I just wanted to say a few words about street view. This is unusual, unforgettable building. Who put those trees in front of building? Why? It doesn't make any sense.
The downtown branch is an old bank building with marble floors old check writing stands. Beautiful architecture! The 5th floor has a roof top garden and is open as long as weather permits. There is a small cafe with coffee and sandwiches on the first floor . If you like grandfather clocks there is almost a grandfather clock on every floor. The original vault has been turned into a small movie theater and movies are shown almost every Saturday . Great children's area too!
It is simply the most beautiful library I have ever seen. It had been a bank in past years. It was all marble columns and floors. It still had the original vault with its huge thick door, in fact they show movies inside of it. Just awesomely magnificent.
The front of the building is amazing. Once you walk in you are surrounded by knowledge and beauty and wisdom. We saw a fantastic postcard collection that covered well over a century of Kansas City history.
The building is a great throwback to when buildings were built to be functional and beautiful at the same time! Nestles among other buildings downtown it definitely stands out! Great place!
It's two years later when I'm writing this and I still feel the awe and glee of discovering this gem. An old bank converted to a modern library while preserving the character, reveling in the opulence and extending it with notable flair. As a book resource I can't comment but as an architectural delight I can attest to its beauty. It's worth touring every floor and don't miss the vault downstairs where, if you're lucky, you'll find a movie being screened. Truly a special find.
I stopped in the library after seeing that they were currently showing two exhibits I was interested in seeing. The first was called 'Apron Strings' which was a collection of various vintage aprons which have been very well preserved. The collection was lovely and included bits of background and history on each one. Very enjoyable. The other exhibit which was very interesting to visit was a historical display on the Kansas City Stockyards. Also, If you are in the downtown area, don't miss the parking garage adjacent to the library. It's south facade features a series of book spines and is impressive. I also picked up a brochure at the library for a walking tour of the library district which features information on a number of beautiful historic buildings and is very interesting.
We didn't go inside just took pictures in front of the books painted on wall. Loved it! Would recommend to have pictures done in front of them.
this library is very nice. lots of good reading and audio/video stuff. I spent a lot of time here. go up to the top floor for a good view of Kansas City.
It is worth going by to see the front of the building. It looks like large classic books. picture worthy.
Beautiful historical buillding right around the edge of the Power & light district. Love the European style columns and the chandeliers. Def. worth stopping by if you enjoy this type of architectural design.
