What a lovely place. The staff was sensitive and kind, too. The trees are mature and the autumn colors were popping. The grounds are well kept. If I lived closer, I think I would jog through here because of it's serene atmosphere.
We have lived in the Hartford area for over 50 years and never visited this place where many of CT's rich and famous are buried. Recently they celebrated their 150 year anniversary with an event called "Beyond the Gates". It was a fascinating day with which included the Governor's Foot Guard Band and many other performers. They do have other events through out the year which should be interesting as well. Even if nothing is going on, you can walk through the grounds, which are lovely and well maintained. Perhaps something of the likes of J.P. Morgan, Samuel Colt, Audrey Hepburn, or Wallace Stevens will rub off on you as you walk past their graves.
Visiting our passed family here is always special in this historic cemetery. Whether you have a connection here or not, it is a wonderful place to visit. Stop by the office too. The people there are very helpful. Lastly, make a donation to keep this place around and beautiful.
Though I do go there more than once a year,it's always special when my brother is there too.We were very blessed to be raised by the best & just driving past the rich & famous on the way there always brings to my mind that we all end up in the same place...Heaven.
The Cedar Hill Cemetery is a garden cemetery so it is a very nice place to walk around and/or learn about the famous people buried there. Such names as Katharine Hepburn, J.P. Morgan, Thomas Gallaudet, and Horace Wells are buried there. They offer a free audio tour via the cell phone, which is nice. On a day with good weather, it is a very beautiful place to walk. We even saw two baby deer!
This cemetery is beautifully appointed and is a wonderful place to walk and see some amazing sculpture. If you're into historical places, there are a number of famous and semi-famous people buried here -- Katharine Hepburn for example. The Cedar Hill Cemetery Foundation has a great self-guide brochure/map. Bring a camera.
The cemetery can be reached by city transit, but check service times before heading out. Located close to lovely Trinity College campus. This is a large cemetery, so be prepared for some walking. Maps and visitor information is located at the front entrance. We were paying respects to Ms Katherine Hepburn, who is buried in a family plot marked with a large boulder. Many notables, including JP Morgan are also buried at Cedar Hill.
Very nice cemetery to be buried in when talking cemeteries. They keep the place looking very nice. I've attended several funerals where the burial plots have been in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Very historic place , beautifully kept, par like grounds. Many unique monuments and historic graves.
Just a gem inside downtown Hartford, for a stroll, a jog. Tons of history and you'll wish you lived nearby.
J.P. Morgan, Joseph Twichell, Samuel Colt, Katherine Hepburn, Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet are some of the more famous residents of this wonderful example of a Victorian Cemetery. Beautiful, well-maintained grounds and inspirational monuments make it a wonderful place to spend a morning, an afternoon, or a day, And you can still buy a plot!
I have never considered visiting a cemetery other than paying homage to a loved one so I was a little apprehensive. But Cedar Hill encourages visitors. They provide a map of famous people's graves as well as a map of the many type of trees that grow on their grounds. It was very tranquil and quiet. A great place to reflect and admire the beautiful artistry of the headstones.
This is a beautifully landscaped cemetery and a great place to go for a nice walk. . There are occasionally staff led walks here which are very interesting.
Love the trees. Love their programming. Their Halloween tours are so much fun.
THE most famous dead people in Hartford. See the graves of writers, artists and actors. People who influenced the industrial revolution in America.
