Went to Catoctin Creek on a group on with friends and family for a tour. The tour was cancelled so they offered us a premium tasting. They have several different tasting flights including whiskey, brandy, or mixed drinks. The staff where very nice but my only complaint would be that I wish the lady serving us would have discussed more about how their whiskey is distilled. She just poured our drinks kind of left us alone. The whiskey tasting very good and was smooth. If your in the area, I would suggest stopping in!
A large group of us came for a Groupon deal they were offering to get a tasting and tour. The tour part was cancelled and so they gave us a premium flight instead. The drinks we had were small, but very tasty! They had some nice options available for us to choose from, but we could only get the one flight, they advised it was an ABC law. So, there was nothing else for us to buy or do there and we left. While pouring our flights the lady helping us simply poured and didn't give any description of what the whiskey was she was using. That would have been nice, as it would have helped us with deciding if we wanted to buy some to go.Otherwise the place was decorated and laid out very nice. The staff was very friendly too.
Fun time and was a great deal through Groupon! Cool little spot with yummy cocktails. Staff was friendly .
We arrived without a reservation but they took us in as they had a free spot. We were lucky because they turned away people that came after us. The tasting room is very nicely finished in retro-modern industrial style, with large windows allowing a good look at the alembics/potstills.I had a flight of whiskey and my wife a flight of cocktails. My three wiskeys were:1) Mosby Spirit, a white whisky, clean with a sweet nose and a taste of rye bread. Easy to drink and great base for cocktails.2) Roundstone Rye, which is the Mosby after having spent a year in an oak barrel. While still young, that year in oak brings much more complexity and flavors.3) Roundstone Rye 92 proof. Another year, an higher proof, carefully selected barrels, really a great rye whisky, my favorite of the three. I bought a bottle to make a present to a friend. The owners are clearly dedicated to produce the very best from local sources. The people at the tasting room were nice, informative and smiling. A great place to visit in a lovely part of Virginia. My wife, who is not much into spirits, wants to return, but this time we will make a reservation!
Cool place, great little sample cocktails. A fun place to meet friends for a quick visit. Per Virginia ABC laws, each visitor can only have one flight (either of the spirits or the cocktails), so it's not someplace you'd linger for too long. It is worth a visit though.
I attended a bottling workshop in their old location. It was awesome! One of the owners, Scott, gave us a tour first and then showed us the steps that we would be completing. It was awesome! This time, I took the tour in their new site. Not only is it a huge step up from their old place, but it has a history of its own and CCDC worked hard to maintain the buildings original structure as much as possible. Our tour guide, John, did a fantastic job explaining the distilling process and the renovations to the site. He also pointed out that they use solar energy and their products are organic and kosher. Samples are offered in the tasting room along with a variety of products and souvenirs. I highly recommend this tour for anyone even remotely interested in whiskey! It's worth the drive!
I've had the whiskey prior to my visit at a bar in DC and loved it. Grabbed the groupon as soon as I saw it to have a nice outing with my girls. Although this was a little drive for us, it was well worth it. Maya did an excellent job with our tour of the distillery and explaining the process. She answered all our questions no matter how random. I was actually able to regurgitate the whole process to my sister later so she must have done a great job. The tasting was nice but unfortunately due to the ABC laws we were limited to one flight. Would have loved to try more of the whiskeys and the gin as well. The "Have you seen Ned" was a great cocktail and it was nice that you can mix and match the $10 flights. No food yet either unless you come on the special nights but I beleive they said they are working on this as well. Overall a nice outing and would definitely recommend this for a whiskey, brandy, gin lover who would like to support this small business.
We booked a tour and headed in to check this one out. The building itself is really cool, original old walls and floors and a great bar in the centre as you walk in. The girl doing the tour was lovely, and very informative, answered all our questions.. ( admittedly, theres not an awful lot to see on the tour because the place is pretty small.) - it is however, very interesting all the same. We tried a few of the whiskeys and long drinks tasters. being a big fan of Gin i was a bit sceptical of what i was in store for. Pleasantly surprised... the Gin is great. Its a shame that you can't stay there for an evening and have a few drinks. ( some law says all u can have is three testers and that it, in mini glasses!). Not the fault of the distillery. A nice way to spend an hour in Purcellville.
I've been to Catoctin Creek a half dozen times or more over the last three years or so. Most times I'm in Loudon County visiting family my brother-in-law and I head over. The new building is fine -- a real upgrade from the old spot in the mixed use strip where they started. I don't know that I'd pay to get a tour. In the old days I think this was free, although I'm not positive.Their Watershed gin has become my gin of choice and I keep it stocked at home and office alike. Plus they sell Strong Tonic which is unavailable in North Carolina. This combination makes the absolute best gin and tonic I've ever had. Accordingly my normal drink of choice at a bar has been shelved because they pale in comparison. I'm not a brown liquor guy but friends and neighbors seem to enjoy the Roundstone Rye. In quantity.Well worth the effort is making it to the distillery for one of their multi-course dinners. My wife and I flew up for one a couple of months ago to go with said brother-in-law and his wife. The food was prepared by a local chef (The Wandering Chef, I believe) and paired with cocktails featuring their house spirits. We will definitely make that a regular event.
We visited since someone had given us a voucher as a gift. The tour is ok, but I don't think I would have paid to take it. The best part of the building is the rustic old-fashioned look and feel of it, but with a bit of a modern edge. I really liked the way the owners had renovated it. The tastings were nice, and what I especially appreciated is that they had cocktail flights for those of us who don't necessarily enjoy whiskey. Along with their whiskeys, they also sold a variety of other products including chocolates and even syrups. A cute little place, and definitely worth a visit.
Ok.. so i dont really know what or how to review this place. On walking in I really liked the atmosphere of the building. You can see the distillery thru the windows and you can see the kegs on the one side of the building.. on the other side tables, chairs and a huge bar are set up. The employees there are very friendly, pleasant and professional. We were a group of 4 and we ordered 3 different tastings. We really didnt like any of the libations. 2 of the 3 of us are real drinkers and know their stuff. The tour I bought on groupon and it was a good tour. They knew what the process was and answered all our questions. So would I go back, no I wouldnt.. does that mean that you shouldnt go.. no it doesnt mean that either.. If i am to make a suggestion, I guess it would be.. buy one tasting.. share it with your entire group.. if you like it.. great.. get more.. or try another tasting and see what you think.
You can't miss the place. Plenty of free parking alongside. Enjoyed the informative tour which was well worth the $5. charge. The bar was not particularly crowded so got served without undue delay by courteous workers. My companion and i purchased a bottled of their top shelf rye whiskey which I'm enjoying as I write this. It was a bit more expensive than commercial brands at the ABC store, lacking the economies of scale, but I like to support local craft businesses. Just a block and a half away is Magnolias, an excellent restaurant to finish the day.
My wife and I had a very nice time trying several different whiskeys and brandies. The tour is ok but is only $5 per person. Keep in mind they have no liquor license so you will only get a flight to try or a choice of trying one of their beverages, not both. I thought it was cool that the owners went to Ireland and came back with the idea of opening this place.
I've been on beer and wine tasting/tours and visiting a whiskey distillery is an interesting experience to include if you're doing any wine tours in the area and would recommend including the short less than 1 hr tour before you do the tasting. The tour covers the history and surprises the owners found then they renovated the building, the history of making whiskey and the distilling process that goes into making their craft spirit. This is not done as a large mass production process, but in smaller quantity with the whole operation taking place on a small footprint and in a very organic and environmentally conscious manner. The tour and tastings are priced separately and very reasonable. If there is not enough seating room at the counter, you can take the samples to the tables but cannot be served there due to the liquor laws. There are 3 different sampling with 3 samples in each and enough in each to get the flavor full up. The tasting are not like a typical wine flight or in any order of complexity but is experienced on its own merit. I tried the Standard sampling and found the gin very heavy on the juniper berry. The distillery is located on the main street with a free parking lot at the end of the building.
We recently stopped in to do a tasting and had both poor service and great service. Due to a large tour already in progress, there were about 8 of us at the bar left to wait. Eventually the servers returned and whiskey flowed. We just had time for a quick tasting and we left with a bottle of the higher proof rye whiskey. Great little building (loved the wood floors) in a nice town. I'd definitely stop by and spend some time when I'm in the area.
