As of right now, March 2015, the water levels are low, but they still have a boat ramp open. They have a fishing dock and lots of places to fish from land. A good 3 mile hiking trail, that is not too hard and a couple more that are pretty easy also. The swimming area is pretty large, but you have to walk quit a ways due to the low water level. They have many cabin's built by the CCC which have fireplaces that are pretty neat to look at, although I have yet to stay in one due to owning a travel trailer. You can ride your bike anywhere in the park. ( not too many hills) They have a bath house which is fairly new. Restrooms are usually pretty clean. Staff, very friendly.
This park is a gem. The foot trails are compelling and nice, and the new mountain bike trail looks great! It is about three miles long, and from what I could see of it, it looked delightful; curvy, smooth, and fast. We walked down to the lake and it was a bit low, but it was surprisingly clean and fresh looking. The whole area seemed healthy, even in the dead of winter. The birds were happy. This area of Texas is arguably the prettiest. I wish I had my mountain bike on this last visit. This park is underutilized, at least in the winter. The entry fee seems a bit pricey at $4 per person. If you just want to look around for less than a half hour you can get in for free. Enjoy!
Customer service made wrong date of reservation of cabins, but was very helpful to correct it later. Staff was very friendly. There're several trails around the lake. We stayed in one bed cabins for two nights during Christmas time. The park has very few visitors. It's quiet and cold. The cabins were simple and clean. But it showed its age. A/C Heater can not be adjusted for temperature in one room. Lake is yellow colored and dirty. Water level is low and showed some land which was used to be underwater. Tried fishing from bank, but could not catch any. No sign of fish near banks. I may not go back again.
Spent Christmas at Lake Brownwood. I was hoping for snow, but it was OK we ended up with perfect weather. I don't think that that it mattered that it wasn't summer there was a couple of things to do and it was nice to have the park to ourselves along with a few other families. We rented a cabin, our 2nd stay at one in a Texas state park since abandoning the tent :) We rented the Loma Vista Lodge big enough for 8ppl. It was better than expected and we loved that it sat up on a hill with a great view of the lake. It really made for some nice sunsets. The cabin has 2 bedrooms each with 2 full beds, there is one restroom w/a shower. The kitchen has a stove w/oven, microwave and full size fridge. Loved the den and table that seats 8, we are a huge family so it was nice to sit down and have our meals together in one table. My only downside to the cabin was the hot water runs out quickly and the shower head was low. We are all tall, so maybe it wont make a difference for most families. The park itself has a fishing pier, walking trails and beach area and it was a nice stay for 2 days. Other than that there is not much to do, but it was lovely and we enjoyed it. There is a grocery store, gas station and dollar store that is no more than 15 mins away should you need any supplies. Oh....and this had to have been the first state park that we stayed at that we all had cell service, that was a plus. Would like to go back and visit in the summer and rent the bigger cabins.
If you like to hike or into Geo Caching, this is the place to go. Very scenic and beautiful!! If you like to camp, fish and boating, then you'll love this state park!!!!
About 2 hours west of Fort Worth is Lake Brownwood state park. This park is different than most of the other ones near us as it has cabins to rent. We, and another family, rented the Fisherman's Lodge. It was great for us with plenty of room. There were 6 small bedrooms, each with a double bed. You will need to bring your own cooking utensils, radio, etc but what do you expect. It's really like camping with shelter. There's a great patio and firepit in the back of the cabin which we hung out at most of the time. During the day we went on hikes which could take you anywhere from 20 minutes to a couple hours. The possibilities are endless.
We visited brownwood lake state park on a road trip from Dallas on a unusually cold November Sunday drive. Unseasonable weather made the 36 degrees and 25 mile an hour north wind a challenge to enjoy the great scenic views at the park. But nonetheless we grinned and bared the weather and got some great pictures. We had the special luck of seeing the floating fog coming off the warm lake on such a cold day- it was cool! You for sure need to climb the stairs of the main lodge where the historical marker is to get a picture from roof level. We got some great views from the back porches of unoccupied cabins around the lake. Several hiking paths and fishing pier, and day/over night camping. Worth the drive for pictures and fun!
We drove through just to check it out to see if we wanted to bring our boat back to fish later in the year. The lake was very low and it looked as if the boat ramps were closed. There were a few people camping there and it looks like a very nice place to camp and spend some time. The cabins look very nice and very comfortable. We hope to rent a cabin and take the boat once the water level is back up. It was raining when we drove through so we didn't see any wildlife but the place is just beautiful!
My husband and I rented a 2 person cabin (#6) for Memorial Day weekend. Although it rained the entire time, we still enjoyed our stay and will definetly return. The cabin was rustic, clean and just perfect. It was secluded with a beautful view. We had wildlife come and visit us (wild turkeys, deer, armadillo and a fox twice!) and beautful bird watching. Staff were all friendly. Looking forward to a returning trip!
Easter w/ extended family at Lake Brownwood is always a treat. Cabin #5 this time around. Secluded and quiet, away from the bustle of the campground but close enough to walk over and join the fray. Have always enjoyed this park, even though the old fort style playground of my youth is long gone, it's still a great park.
Been to many Texas Parks and I enjoyed this one for the trails and the quiet. Buildings from the CCC still on site, with one area having full hook ups. Very nice scenery.
The Cabins for two were very well kept, good hot water, clean stove & refrigerator, and the hiking trails were GREAT! We saw two foxes, an armadillo, and many different birds. We enjoyed the amazing sunrise over the lake and plan on camping out again in the near future. They had a water break and the park ranger worked late getting it fixed so we were without water for a very limited time. We also enjoyed the new trail up to the ranger's station and overall had a great experience.
Cabin 1 is comfortable and cozy. It's situated overlooking the lake and you can enjoy watching the birds fly home to roost as the sun sets. Windows allow for watching the sunrise from bed. The fireplace is large and at the foot of the bed. The hiking trail is nearby but the cabin is shielded from direct view. We had a small plumbing problem that was speedily addressed by courteous staff.
Spent a long weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) at Lake Brownwood State Park. Stayed in the Council Bluff campground - site 88. The staff at check in was excellent. The park is nice and clean including the rest rooms/showers. The park was pretty busy on Saturday and Sunday which was no surprise sine the weather was clear and sunny with highs in the 70's. As with the rest of Texas the lake level was very low but there were still boats out on the water. There are many cabins in this park, more than I have seen in any other state park in Texas. They are in great shape and they almost made me want to rent one of them and just park my trailer. They have AC and heat and the ones I looked in had beautiful stone fireplaces. Since we were here in November shade was not a factor and the campgrounds did not have much In late spring and summer I probably will choose another park to camp in. The hundred degree days without shade on a trailer can be brutal. Bottom line - a good campground for early spring and fall.
We brought our camper to the lake to stay in, but found some lovely cabins around the lake. We plan to go back on our anniversary to stay in the secluded cabins to enjoy the sunsets at the lake. If you enjoy fishing there is a pier that is open 24 hours. A great place for family events or week- end getaways.
