oakwood cemetery

On a visit with our SHSU student, we went looking at historical places. This place is located in an average part of town but it is full of history. If you go, do a little research first so you have an idea what to look for there. Sam Houston's grave was right by the entrance we went in. If you have time, there is a lot of history there. I'm a history buff so I loved it. My wife and kids are not history buffs, and they even liked the trip.

While located in a less than impressive part of Huntsville, the history attached to the Oakwood Cemetery makes it a must see destination for students of Texas history.

If you enjoy local history and unique outings, this is perfect. Sam Houston's grave is only a part of this lovely old cemetery. When the weather is nice it provides a shady and peaceful stroll into the past. I live here and have visited quite often, but never got around to posting a review. When friends come to visit, this is one of the local spots I bring them to.

Besides Sam Houston's grave, there are many other famous historical people buried here. There are also slave graves. This is a very old cemetery. We spent quite a bit of time exploring here.

On my last visit, Oakwood was quiet and peaceful, as it should be.It is the final resting place of many who contributed to Texas in fields such as business, education, religion, etc. The grave of the first man to use the word "sociology" in the title of a book, American sociologist, George FItzhugh is in Oakwood. His grandson, Marcellus Foster, founded the Houston Chronicle. Henderson King Yoakum, who wrote the first history of Texas, is in OakwoodThe most famous grave is that of General Sam Houston.
