This museum is in a restored original building that is beautiful in and of itself. They have great artifacts from various walks of life; everything from local mining camps, prehistoric fossils and rocks and household implements. And it's free of charge!
There are so many items to see at this museum, very informative about Raton and the area. Actually found a picture there with a family member in it. So much history!
If you have a hour or so in Raton, spend it at this local museum. It is in a former department store and still shows the tin ceiling and original floors. The collection is extensive, focusing on local history although there is an excellent small collection of western Native American items. The basketry is especially impressive. There is an interesting exhibit that puts the nearby Folsom site in full perspective. The exhibit labels sometimes are rather minimal, but Curator Sanchez can answer any question that occurs to you. He is as valuable a resource as the museum itself. Like many local museums this one could use any monetary support you care to donate.
Lots of local and surrounding county history here. The people who put this together have done a marveleous job and desire much credit.
Fun history of the area and the cureator, Mr. Sanchez is a delight! The area was established by a multitude of miners and ranchers and the stories are great fun.
The best part was the tour given by Roger Sanchez. He was knowledgeable of the area and passionate...just great tour from him
We've visited several times over the years, back to when it was a little hole-in-the-wall near the RR. It's now in a nicely-restored building in the heart of the business district, with exhibits on area history, plus some nice art displays and even a traveling exhibit. Mr. Sanchez took good care of us.
