While the Barnhaus itself didn't take long to see, the entire complex was worth the trip. The Barnhaus was constructed in Germany in the 1660s (yes, it's that old). It was totally dismantled, shipped to the US, and it was reassembled in its present location. My only complaint was that the Barnhaus and other buildings had numerous large signs on every item of interest. It was hard to get really good pictures because of these placards in front of (or on) everything. Other than that, it was informative and well done. The Trinity Lutheran Church on the site was absolutely gorgeous. Built in the early 1900s after the original was destroyed in a tornado, the building was ultimately moved to its present location, and it's now a non-denominational church that's open to the public. It's a great place to take pictures, as it sits on a hillside with a huge cornfield behind it. I'm glad we took the time to find this.
Loved the location the setting and everything. Was there for a wedding reception and had a great time.
Even though we had to do all the set up and clean up, this was a magnificent place to have a summer wedding. The staff (made up of mostly volunteers) was very accommodating!
Coming back from Des Moines left I80 to the Danish Windmill (Elk Horn), the little mermaid (Kimballton) and just had to see the hausbarn in Manning. Fantastic setting a lot of old history in the Bauernhaus (aka hausbarn). Then 141 back to I29 and off to Rapid City - fantastic site.
This is a faithfully-reconstructed Hausbarn that was originally in Germany.
We really enjoyed the Manning Heritage Park, very interesting and well-maintained. The hausbarn was brought over from Germany, it was buit in 1660. Something you will not see in the U.S. and great historical artifacts and interesting displays. The farmstead and church were also great, farmstead we really enjoyed! If you like historical sites, you will not be disappointed. http://www.flickr.com/photos/sdld/sets/72157624631915550/
The quiet quant town of Manning is very friendly and amazingly vibrant. There aren't the thrills or accomodations one would normally associate with a vacation spot, but instead a family friendly experiance.
