Lums Pond features 2 intertwining & rolling single and double-track trails - great for the beginner mountain biker. The campground is pretty nice and the day sights are as well. The problem is the pond's poor water quality from algae blooms. There are signs posted not to allow your dog to drink from the pond and to bathe them immediately after swimming due - so sad. The bizarre thing is Piranha Sports hosts their annual Lums Pond Triathlon & Duathlon here. Why would they allow athletes to swim in the water when they refuse regular patrons and warn against your dog?
The campground we stayed at was a real gem. There are 6 electric sites down by the lake that give you a perfect sight to wake up to after a long day of driving.
My husband and I like to ride in the park, they also have a zip line that's a ton of fun. A lot of areas for your pets and barbecue. We have events there sometimes. Horse riding is always fun there.
There is plenty of parking available, a boat ramp, picnic tables, grills and pavilions, a variety of trails that go around the pond. A great location for hiking, kayaking, and picnicking. As this is a state park, there is an entrance fee during certain times of the year.
A very nice State Park with a lot of variety. Walking/hiking, activities for groups, outings, and a very nice large pond for water activities.
I've been coming to Lums Pond since the 70's, so it's been a joy to see all the changes and the way things have evolved though the years.A park entrance fee is charged daily from March 1 to November 30. The cost is $3 a car for DE residents or $6 if your vehicle is out of state. The hiking trails around the pond are beautiful any time of the year, and for the most part you have them to yourself. The trails though the woods are always interesting, complete with little wooden bridges here and there to make your hike more comfortable. The staff and volunteers do an amazing job keeping this park clean, keeping the trails clear and just taking care of the place in general. There is horseback riding or you can rent a kayak or canoe or paddle boat. Right now the boathouse is only open on weekends in September, making next weekend the last for this season. A single kayak is $9 an hour or $45 for the day, and a tandem is $11 per hour or $55 for the day. They stop renting boats an hour before closing at 6 p.m.They have just opened a brand new "Go Ape Zip Line and Tree Top Adventure". I haven't done it yet, but many folks are loving it.
Fun place to go walking, riding bikes, sitting by water, playing at beach, kayaing in lake, etc, etc.
We stayed in one of two yurt's at the campground. Couple of things to note: when we booked the site, there was no obvious mention that this is a dry campground. We only found out in the fine print on the website (but not on the booking page). Not that it was a huge deal (we were staying there to go to a NASCAR race) but it would have been nice to know ahead of time. That being said, this is a very quiet campground with friendly campers. Some of the cleanest camp washrooms we have experienced and the water pressure and temp of the showers was spectacular! The yurt also had a ceiling fan, AC unit and a generous number of electrical outlets. But, there were these insects that were EVERYWHERE inside our yurt. We had to clean out the bedding, our clothes and the building for a while before we could comfortably settle in to sleep.
I love riding my bike at Lums Pond. Each of the 3-trails are marked well. On this day, after 5 miles on the Little Jersey Trail my back began to hurt (from a previous surgery). So, we moved over to the paved roads for a smooth return to our car. Each trail has it's own personality.Little Jersey is for Hiking, Biking, and EquestrianDistance: 8.1 milesDifficulty: EasyThe Little Jersey Trail is an outer loop through the park on packed earth surface. Trail users will pass through hardwood forests and open areas. The trail links to the campground, Equestrian Center, and boat ramp and crosses the park entrance road. The trail is wide to accommodate shared use among hikers, bikers, and equestrians.
really enjoyed our visit! Walking trails a bit much for replaced and reconstructed knees, but there is a boardwalk available near the nature center.
The perfect local place to get away for a day of kayaking or boating. The rental rates are great and there is no road traffic noise!
Took a ride down from west chester, PA on a hot day in august just to look around. Couldn't believe the amount of trails and water access. What really blew me away though was the Zip line across the lake and the features that make even an old lady like me feel like a paratrooper or a monkey climbing through the trees on the rope ladders and suspended walks. Loads of fun for a family outing. Expect to spend the day and bring lots of drinks and food.
This was our first time staying in a yurt and it did not disappoint! Upon our arrival to the campground, we weren't quite sure what to do because the camp office/store was closed. We just proceeded to our campsite since there wasn't really any other choice, and we saw they had left the vehicle permit and campsite permit on the post there- so we really didn't need to check in or anything. Luckily, they had sent the yurt's door lock combination to me in a email (I had made the reservation online) so I pulled it up and we went right in. We stayed at campsite 17, and the yurt was very close to one of the trails along the water which was so beautiful. I'm assuming the DE State Parks website hasn't been updated in some time, because it said there basically weren't any amenities aside from electrical outlets. However, the yurt had a ceiling fan and a portable air conditioner, which worked great! The deck had two plastic lawn chairs on it, and there was also a little kayak-type thing attached to the yurt's deck which was free to use, and the paddles and lifejackets were stored inside the yurt. There was a nice futon and little table, and the bed was actually really comfortable. There were also plenty of outlets- I noticed six, but perhaps there were more. This site is about a 2 minute walk to the restrooms. A little far, but the restrooms were very clean and nice. We stayed on the Thursday night before labor day weekend and it was very quite- not many of the campsites were taken. We didn't see any signs of park rangers like some of the reviews suggested. There was a little truck that passed from time to time that looked like it could have been some overseer, but they never spoke to anyone. I can't imagine they would bother anyone unless they were causing a ruckus. There were a couple of instances where people walked through our campsite from the nearby trail (instead of around our campsite) which was a little weird... I guess they were confused or had poor judgment. But other than that, we had no complaints and enjoyed a lovely night!
We visited to do Go Ape which is a zip line park up in the trees. It's a real blast for the whole family. We did the one in Williamsburg Va. last year and loved that too.
The campsites here are very spacious. The bathrooms and showers were clean. We had a wonderful leisurely hike along the Swamp Forest trail, which is well maintained. I was a bit apprehensive of this place after reading some of the reviews on here before our trip- mainly the ones about being woken up by rangers with flashlights rummaging through belongings. We had absolutely no such run ins. We had as peaceful a night's sleep as a couple with a 9 month old can have. I would highly recommend camping here!
