My husband and I went on a canyoneering trip to Cassidy Arch. This was my first time ever canyoneering.. I LOVED it. We felt safe and well instructed for all the drops. We learned a lot about the ropes and knots. I am very excited to go again and highly recommend this tour company when making your choice to experience backcountry Capitol Reef!
Now we had 3 days of wonderful time in Hanksville’s area canyons in boot camp style. It was our 3rd time that we did it with Steve. It was fantastic and unparalleled experience again.Steve is really great guide for such adventures easily dealing with that wide range of difficulty levels and so he can offer the most diverse exposure great area in Utah.
My friends and I had hired Steve Howe previously to rappel Cassidy Arch in Capitol Reef State Park. All of us have some experience with rock climbing and mountaineering and knew we did not want to have sweat the safety issues that are so important with technical canyoneering. Steve was outstanding in his safety precautions and knowledge of rope work. So, we hired him again to take us to several technical slot canyons. What a fantastic trip! Steve chose a great selection of canyons for us to explore with the just the right amount of challenge and beauty equal to anything you have seen in magazines. Having his expert knowledge allowed us to relax and enjoy the experience. As a bonus, he has a wealth of knowledge about the plants, animals, and geology of the region. I would bring him small rocks and ask what they were and why they were shaped as such, like I was a kid again. We shared lots of laughs and he was patient, relaxed, and seemed to enjoy sharing the canyons with us, even though he had recently had another trip through the same canyons. We plan to climb with Steve again.
I recently went with Steve on a 4 day overnight backpacking hike as a 50+ solo traveller. It was a fantastic experience. Capitol Reef is a stunning destination--well away from the high traffic areas of the better known parks in Utah and rivals any in terms of beauty and interest. Steve is an amazing guide; extremely experienced, possesses wealth of knowledge of the area, and can take you to stunning back country routes very few would ever attempt to navigate on their own. Expect to see stunning scenery almost continuously while in the company of a truly professional who will keep you safe......and entertained as well! Will be back with friends in tow.......
I hired Steve Howe to guide two of us through Capitol Reef's Cathedral Valley on Labor Day. As a serious photographer, I wanted to travel the 60 miles in this remote area/difficult terrain to capture shots I couldn't otherwise get. I was impressed with Steve's level of energy and knowledge about the best spots for photography. He picked us up at our hotel before 5 a.m. and spent more hours with us than we had bargained for. Although I take considerable time with each of my shots, Steve never rushed me and continued to be enthusiastic throughout the day. Although I had to contend with haze created by wildfire smoke from California, I came away with several shots I'll be entering into local photo competitions. Steve also told me about other areas in the vicinity of Capitol Reef that I should consider visiting for photography. Photographers who want guidance in the Capitol Reef would do well to consider Redrock Adventure Guides.
My daughter and I had the pleasure of hiring Steve Howe to guide us through the often unheard and overlooked Capitol Reef National Park. What hidden gems. We went on a 7 hour Sunset photo shoot and a 7 hour Sunrise photo shoot over two days. Steve is very informed and knows the area very well having spent many years there. He guided us to remote areas within the park and helped us with the photos. He customized our tours to our physical abilities. I would highly recommend Steve Howe and Redrock adventures to anyone..Gil Epstein MD
If you are looking for a wonderful one of a kind outdoor adventure for the family this is it. My husband, my 10 yr old son, and I went on a day canyoneering trip with steve in Capitol reef national park. We hiked, we repelled, we shimmied through one of the lesser known national parks in Utah, it was like we had the mountains to ourselves. Steve had so many stories and so much knowledge to share, we couldn't have asked for a better guide or adventure.
My husband and I got Steve's name from another great guide we met on a trip earlier this year. We had been canyoneering before, but wanted to try a different park. Steve did not disappoint! We had lots of fun and were challenged with all different sorts of slots. Steve always showed the attention to detail that you want when doing something that could be considered very dangerous. We certainly recommend Redrock Adventure Guides and will use Steve again when we travel back to this area. Thanks Steve!!!
I can't say enough about the Redrock Adventure Guides and the 7 day Capitol Reef Canyon trip that Steve and Jen Howe gave my daughter and I. Steve and Jens love of the area is infectious. It truly was a trip of a life time. The breathtaking unique beauty of the area is just awesome. Steve's extensive experience and his knowledge of the area is quite evident throughout the trip. His knowledge of the Canyon history, geology, habitat, the technical aspects of canyoneering/repelling, and his ability to relay that information to people is amazing. Both Steve and Jen relay their knowledge with interesting anecdotes and a splash of local lore. Steve's ability to put people at ease and ensure them of safe travel in a new environment is uncanny. I would recommend a trip with Redrock Adventure Guides without hesitation to anyone who is looking to explore Capitol Reef Canyon or for that matter anywhere they would be taking you. I must add, they are great people also. They Rock! You can't lose.......
We had a great time with our guide, Tim Pote, from Red Rock Adventures. We are a group of four 50-somethings and were a little out of our comfort zone in some areas, but Tim patiently took us through the process, taught us what we needed to know, and we had a great time. He also provided a great deal of information about the local geology and plant life that enhanced the trip. It was the highlight of our trip to Capitol Reef National Park. We would recommend Red Rock Adventures and Capitol Reef National Park to anyone looking for a great adventure experience!
We hooked up with Steve last spring for our first trek through the amazing backcountry of Capitol Reef. It was such an awesome trip we were able to get another group of 10 together for a return trip this spring. Read the reviews, Steve is the guy you want for any length trip you've got planned in the area. He took our range-of-skill-level backpackers through some serious backcountry, provided the perfect combination of guidance and independence, and shared knowledge only a true native could provide. I'll be planning another trip back soon and the first thing on my checklist is to find out when Steve is available!
I spent 3 days with Steve hiking and canyoning in Capitol Reef NP. Steve is the real deal and a genuine guy. He knows a great many things from a life full of adventuring. I felt 100% safe with all of his decisions during our time in the backcountry. Aside from guiding us through amazing areas, Steve told interesting stories and answered my bevy of questions (I am a professor so I tend to ask a lot of questions). I gained many insights from my time with Steve and plan to be back soon.
Reassuring, safe, prepared, experienced, smart and nice, not necessarily in that order. We've actually gone on two trips with Steve. The first time we went out for a day hike instead of our planned canyoneering trip because of bad weather. We had such a great time on that hike we knew we wanted to come back and do the canyoneering stuff we originally planned with him. It also goes without saying that the area is spectacular. For our canyoneering trip, we did two days and because it was on the colder side, we stayed at a hotel and did two day trips. I was really concerned with the whole trip because I'm terrified of heights. He was extremely reassuring and his approach of starting off with more mild rappels on the first day really made things enjoyable. He explained everything to us from all of the equipment, how things worked, how he was rigging things and also has a tremendous amount of knowledge of the area's geological and environmental history. Restaurants and places to stay are also things he can help you with. The first day started with a hike leading to a series of rappels that gradually became more difficult. The last one was the steepest and most difficult. He had been doing such a great job of working with us through the whole process that any reservations I had were completely gone by the time we got to the last rappel of the day. And because of that, instead of being concerned about my safety, I was able to enjoy the experience of it all.Day two was a different story. It started out with an approximately 170 foot straight drop from the top of Cassidy Arch. There's no beating around the bush, it's a scary ordeal. Again, he took his time to go over everything with us to reassure us. He had us on belay, backed up our gear and backed up the back up. It was extraordinarily safe. When it came to my turn, I hooked in and about to go down, I honestly almost got up and hiked back down. I sat there for a good 5 minutes, just waiting to go down. He was really cool about not being pushy and just being patient letting me figure it out for myself in my own way. Once I got that first rappel out of the way, the rest were easy. That day, I overcame a serious mental hurdle and it was one of the biggest accomplishments so far for me. It was unforgettable. Looking back, I realized that I trusted him with my life, literally. And I don't know of that many people I could say I would trust in that way. That's a huge testament to his process, his temperament and approach to things. And to top it all off, he's just a flat out nice guy. We're already planning to go back in the spring to learn how to be self sufficient with canyoneering from him. Excited to go back!
Planning our trip to Capital Reef NP, we linked our way to Steve Howe's website. One look sold us, because it featured all the "right stuff" we hope for. We booked a day with Steve and enjoyed much more that we expected. Steve is a photography expert and shares information in a way that even novices like we, can digest and apply. As if that weren't enough, we got into scenic hiking areas we other wise would have missed. WOW factor? You bet!We learned about local history, including geology, & various cultures. Steve sprinkled these insights throughout the day and really gave us a more complete understanding of the area. The bad news? We dropped & broke our camera. We were in the early stages of a five week NP tour and need to buy a replacement, PDQ. The good news? Steve steered us to the website of an out-of-state retailer who has a huge breath of inventory and, prices that are more than competitive. While our new camera was being shipped, with second day delivery, Steve rented us one of his cameras for almost nothing.Going "above and beyond" describes the style of Steve Howe. He's the real deal!I
That was wonderful experience for us, a true adventure! My wife and I had 2 great days in Capitol Reef with Steve. One day full of rappels and another for quite advanced canyoneering.Steve made trip very personalized and enjoyable and also made enough bonuses. Very supportive, professional and extremely informative Steve did an excellent job and we would definitely do it again with him.
