Ask for a brochure at the visitor center before driving to this historic site and read Josie's story. The dirt road is a little bumpy on the way in. Restroom facilities are available. This is a great shady spot for a picnic if you want to stay a little longer.

A nice combination of natural beauty and pioneer history. Very glad I made it all the way to the end of the little auto tour of the park, including a bit of (good) dirt road. Be sure to pick up the informative brochure (at the visitor center, or from a box along the road) outlining some interesting things about the geology and other features of the area. Josie Morris was evidently quite a woman. Pretty good signage at her cabin, but also look her up on Wikipedia or the like. Take one of the trails to appreciate the beauty of the area she chose to make her own; I hiked to Hog Canyon and was the only one on the trail--spent a very pleasant 45 minutes or so. The stream from the canyon provided a sort of oasis in the high desert; lots of flowers & butterflies--if also bugs and some poison ivy.

Make sure you drive out to Josie Morris Cabin when visiting Dinosaur National Monument. What a rugged women that could live out there for 50 years. Wow! interesting cabin with dirt floors. She must have been pretty darn rough and smart to do that. Kids would find it really interesting too.....

Great drive out the the cabin, but once you get out the cabin not a whole lot to see/do. There is a shaded picnic table where you can rest and enjoy lunch and a few hiking trails that lead off from her cabin, but that's about it. Make sure to bring bug spray, its a little buggy around her cabin.

It is unbelievable that she lived here on her own for 50 years! The buildings are starting to decay badly though. This site is deserving of better preservation and that will happen through more visitation. Try to get here and gain an appreciation for the independent spirit! The gravel road is very passable. My Equinox had no problems at all.

Pretty little drive if you are interested in burning a little time. Beautiful little place. Not in very good shape though.

Take the drive out to Josie's cabin- it is the last stop on a guided car tour at Dinosaur. The kids will love walking in the cabin- seeing how life is lived in the canyons years ago by a woman rancher. Wildlife in the area is abundant, and there's a pit toilet at this stop.

Josephine (Josie) Basset Morris ließ sich im Cub Creek im Jahr 1914 fernab der Zivilisation nieder und lebte hier alleine und sehr einsam 50 Jahre. Sie baute sich selbst eine Hütte und Ställe für ihre Tiere. Sie züchtete Vieh, baute Feldfrüchte und Gemüse an bzw. pflanzte Obstbäume.Josie war für ihre Zeit sehr emanzipiert und unabhängig. Sie war mit fünf Männern verheiratet, von vier ließ sie sich wieder scheiden. Das Leben in dieser Abgeschiedenheit muss für sie entbehrungsreich, aber auch sehr herausfordernd gewesen sein. Während der Prohibition stellte sie aus ihren Früchten Alkohol her und verkaufte ihn. Am liebsten trug sie Hosen, für die damalige Zeit kaum vorstellbar. Nur manchmal bekam sie Besuch von ihren Verwandten oder Nachbarn.Im Dezember 1963 stürzte sie in ihrer Hütte und verletzte sich schwer. Sie starb im Alter von 90 Jahren an den Folgen dieses Sturzes.1964 wurde ihre Hütte und das Land Teil des Dinosaur National Monuments. Noch heute kann man Spuren von dieser Pionierin des Wilden Westens in der Nähe der Hütte entdecken - einen Hühnerstall, Reste des Bewässerungssystems, den Gemüse- und Obstgarten.Vom Parkplatz führen zwei empfehlenswerte kurze Trails in den Hog Canyon und Box Canyon. Diese Canyons besitzen auf drei Seiten steile Wände, also nur einen Ein- und Ausgang. Josie benützte sie als Corral für ihre Tiere.
