SCP gives consistently good theater at reasonable prices. Avg ticket price for an adult is $17.50. The theater itself is a lovely old building and nicely equipped. It will soon also have an elevator available for the mobility challenged. They offer a wide variety of shows and always keep their seasons new and different. There is always a good balance of drama and comedy. One of the most respected community theaters in the area and with good reason
We've been season ticket holders for a decade or so. The plays are always well chosen, with a mix of recent materials, classics, and comedy and drama (with an occasional musical). They usually do a great job of production and really have a "stock company" of actors who appear once or twice each season. Good sight lines from anywhere in the theater, though you do have to climb stairs to get to them (they are working on putting in an elevator when the remodel the theater in a few years). They also serve coffee, tea, and cookies at intermission. A bargain
Went here recently for the first time and will be back. SCP is a little community theater many decades old that is still bringing the live theater experience to Schenectady. The space itself is intimate, the only downside being that one must climb a flight of y to get to the theater proper. That said, the company has an addition to the building planned that will provide an elevator, which will eliminate this problem. The play we saw was a dark comedy about the ups and downs of movie stardom. The sets, though no doubt limited by time and budget, were nicely done and set the scenes very nicely (and set changes were handled smoothly and professionally). The three actors were polished and really inhabited their characters. It was a long time since I had seen live theater, and it does take a few minutes to adjust to the idea that you're not watching something on a screen and then that feeling of "reality" grows, that you only get with live theater. With only three actors in the piece each one had quite a bit of dialog yet I didn't hear one flubbed line. This theater is a little gem that deserves to be discovered by more people.
I have been a subscriber for the last 6-7 years; I buy two tickets and take a different friend to each play. The cost of a ticket is extremely reasonable ($11), and the productions are very good. I have an older friend who is hard of hearing who appreciates the headsets that are offered at SCP. They are great about ticket exchanges and I love the cookies and great coffee during intermission. Definitely an excellent deal and a great way to spend a nice evening out!
I've lived in the area for quite awhile, and this is the first time I've attended a performance. I'm sorry I waited so long. The singing and acting were great, and the price of a ticket was incredibly affordable. Even free food at intermission!
This little theater group produces terrific plays at a wonderful value. If you like off beat theater and a great value, this is the place. No matter what the production, it is professionally executed. Well done!
Great theatre, great actors, great price, we had great seats! Will go to all theshows we can! ............................
If you enjoy good theater, this is the place to be in Schenectady. Whether it be comedy or drama, the acting is always top-notch. The building itself is small, so you can an intimate vibe.
SCP offers about five productions a year, starring local talent (and what talent it is!), plus free readings. If you are a season subscriber, you pay just $15 for each play, which I think is the best entertainment value in the Capital Region. You can't go wrong with any of the plays. They are well chosen for their network of actors, well staged, lit, blocked, and set. The sets are often so beautiful and appropriate that the audience gasps or murmurs its approval. The comedies always bring us to tears, we laugh so hard - such a wonderful escape from real life! SCP's pool of actors includes many masters of the art of comedy. Beware the parking, though - the theater is located in the Stockade, and there's a smallish parking lot across the street, but if you don't nab one of those spaces you might have a search on your hands and have to park several blocks away. If you come really early to park, you can't get into the theater - the doors open just 20-30 minutes before the curtain.
Schenectady Civic Players is my favorite community theater. I've seen so many performances there. The actors are always exceptional. Since it's rather small there are no bad seats. I was there today and was near the back and could see and hear perfectly. The price, $15, is great!!!
