This course deserves all of the accolades that it continually receives. My wonderful experience began with the warm greeting by Erik in the parking lot and was followed by the exceptional service by John in the Pro Shop.I was assisted by Erik through a 4-some ahead of us then enjoyed a quiet round of golf in an unbelievable setting on this superb RTJ Jr golf course.Though late in the season (four days before closing), the course was in magnificent condition and the staff fully engaged in providing world class service. Thanks to all!
We played 9/27/14. It was a beautiful day and the Fall scenery was awesome. However, there was no starter and the twosome scheduled after us were allowed to start before us. We watched them hack and whack two balls each. Every hole. With a foursome breathing down our back all day. It was a hot day and I was assured the beverage cart was going around all day. We saw her once on the 4th. That was it. Oh yeah, suspension on carts stink. Beautiful views and some really cool holes but doesn't live up to the hype. Too bad because it could.
returned to sugarloaf after five years. excellant condition. still very difficult. managed to finish just under four hours
I have had the great pleasure of playing the course at the end of september. Unforgettable Greens, fairways, every thing was perfect. The personnel is very dedicated to give you a good day at golf. What a festival of colors..
From your arrival and check in, you'll be treated like royalty. The course is spectacular, with extraordinary framed mountain views from Tee boxes and greens. Do take a pause on each hole to enjoy the layout. Although a very challenging course, the greens are the crux of the game here. Enjoy, and you'll be back again and again.
Sugarloaf has the reputation for being a difficult golf course, and that reputation is well-earned. Don't expect to play your usual game here. Just come with the idea of enjoying the absolutely gorgeous setting surrounding you, the clear air, and the camaraderie with other golfers. I play the senior tees, and she plays the forward tees. Several of the par threes were completely out of reach for her, and she hits a good tee ball. There was little or no bail out area. As many balls were found as were lost, but that's not why you're here. It's the experience! Magnificent views of the Bigelow Range, extreme elevation changes, challenging doglegs, make up the Sugarloaf experience. She said afterward that the course was not one she wished to play a lot, but she would return anytime for the overall experience. The greens had been aerated ten days earlier, and were still in no shape to putt on. Takes longer to fill in than in Florida! Overall, enjoy the experience, and consider it a handicap assisting day! During the summer, use the Play and Stay package, which allows you to play golf and stay free at Sugarloaf Mountain Hotel.....plus a 25% discount at 45 North, their awesome restaurant. We enjoyed it, and looked at it as kind of a bucket list experience.
Bring lots of ammo. this golf course is choice, and the best in Maine. The views form each fairway and green are alone worth the trip, which is enjoyable in it's self. Wonderful start & finish clubhouse, and a memorable day of play. Do it. You'll be very glad you did.
I love Sugarloaf. I've been coming to the mountain for the past 15 years. A group of us just played the annual end of the year golf scramble and my taste for the mountain has been completely soured. Every year, a group of guys (6-10 of us) come up to enjoy a fall golf weekend getaway. This year our trip happened to coincide with Tiger's (owner of Gepetto's) end of the year golf scramble. It was a cold but sunny fall day, and we had a blast. We finished 10 under. However, when we returned to the club house, we were met by the most unprofessional employee, John. He sat cross armed on a cart and scolded a group of 30 something professionals for our behavior on the course. He claimed that our group "threw things out of the cart" and drove all over the course. He proclaimed that we were NEVER invited back. Please keep in mind that my buddy has been a Sugarloafer since he was born, and his family has owned a house on the mountain since 1980. We have dropped over $1000 at the mountain this weekend. And, now, we're never invited back?6 of us played 27 holes yesterday. There was severe weather on the course, one hole was closed and 2 of the 3 carts ran out of juice coming up 18. We never said anything. We went to the bar after the round and had the worst possible service. We chalked it up to being the end of the summer season. But, now... I feel compeled to call it as I see it.Sugarloaf can be a blast. But, if you have to deal with John at either The Bag or the golf course, your experience will be ruined.I'm going to take the Sugarloaf sticker off the back of my car after I post this.
The course layout and views are fantastic. The Pro shop staff were were friendly and helpful.Unfortunately, the condition of the course is not very good. The greens are a mess with a lot of damage which makes for difficult bumpy putting. The fairways have less signifcant damage but many areas have have dead or bare areas. The course experienced some bad weather conditions over the winter and is in the process of replacing it's irrigation system. Can't wait till the course gets back to the level seen in the past
What a beautiful course, hugging the mountains. Challenging but not insane. There are many moments when you will find yourself catching your breath at the magnificent views of the hills. Pro shop was very accommodating and moved up our foursome when we all arrived earlier than expected.
Beautiful views, nice condition for mountain course..Just another "BIG" course. Belongs as 3rd in the state.. Belgrade Lakes by far is the best as it is a true test of skills as well as impeccable conditions.. The staff at Belgrade is ALWAYS courteous and helpful followed by Sunday River,
