What a beautiful area especially in late October with the fall colors abounding. Route 801 provides a very scenic and picturesque drive around much of the lake. Well worth your time if you are in the area.
I love this campground! Pretty lake. Clean campground. Friendly staff. I wish you could reserve one night, but you have to stay 2 nights min. Can anyone please tell me which campsite is the best as far as having a lake view? I know G and I are the best, but I don't know which number is the very best? I don't care if it has electricity or not. Just a real pretty view of the lake. Thank you!
This is a beautiful lake with clear water surrounded by the foothills of the Appalachians. Wonderful place for swimming, boating, or just pulling up a lawn chair and relaxing.Outstanding.
Take a great trip down the Licking in a kayak or canoe. Put in at the spillway and you can take out any number of locations depending on your stamina, time and rate of water flow. Always check before going on flowage rate. Beautiful river with very short shuttle times.
If you enjoy outdoor activities the this hidden gem is a perfect place to visit. Running, swimming, biking or boating in an area that is not overly crowded.
This place is looking like a trash bin on the shore line. Soda pop bottles, beer cans, this place could use a pick up crew from the local prison or jail.
Cave Run Lake is a hidden jewel in the eastern part of Kentucky. If you are into camping, boating, hiking, Mt. biking, swimming, relaxing then this is the place for you. Not real big crowds but I promise once you visit you will be back again and again.
A standard lake with marina and picnic areas. nothing outstanding, but eastern KY is great to just relax.
Driving around the Lake was so beautiful. Hiked some trails that lead to the waters edge. Hoping to rent a cabin in the future.
the beach was full of goose poop...you couldn't swim unless you accessed the beach by a campground and pay $7 a piece to swim
I live only minutes from Cave Run Lake. When you plan a trip to Morehead, you must include a stop at Cave Run. On your way out to the lake, make your first stop (during the warmer months) at the Cave Run Fish Hatchery. There is a huge pool where there are several different types of fish common to the lake. You can lean over the pool, and watch the fish swim around. Always a hit with kids. Taking a drive over the spillway will show you tons of lake beauty. After you cross, you can visit a popular swimming area, or find some interesting trials to hike. (Including Sheltowee Trace). Another neat area to visit, is what's known locally as the spillway. This is were the Army Corp of engineers will slowly let water out of the lake. During a heavy rain season, the water is shooting out from under the spillway so quickly, it's almost scary to watch! Camping at Cave Run is top notch. The staff at the campground is very friendly, and helpful. The sites are well maintained, and perfectly spaced for privacy. I could go on, and on. But, if you are in Morehead...definitely stop at the lake!
In the summer, we spend the weekends at "our" lake. Avid boaters and campers, this is living at its finest for us. Twin Knobs is a clean, quiet campground. Multiple camping loops, most have privacy overgrowth to give you the secluded feeling. Along 801 South, you can find several cabins to rent as well as small grocery, gas and restaurants. POPS BBQ is awesome. The lake is so clear, and very clean. The marina is large, and the staff very helpful. Pontoons, houseboats, and fishing boats are available, best to reserve ahead in season. My favorite time of day is sunset. Cave Run Lake likes to strut its stuff at days end. The magnificent parade of color across the sky at the dam end, is not to be missed.
The Twin Knobs Beach is the best beach at this lake. Zilpo Beach is too rocky and it's too far off the beaten path. This is a good lake for boating. Fishing is below average...my husband refers to it as the dead sea. He fishes for bass and crappie. It's a beautiful lake with mountain views, camp grounds and very little development. Deer's, turkey's, squirrel, bald eagles, geese frequent the area.
This lake is the cleanest in the State of Kentucky and is a pristine natural wonderland. No buildings allowed on the lakeshore so you have a view of the mountains, woodland without looking at multiple houses, businesses, etc. The Muskie capital of the South and also home to the Great American Bald Eagle. We saw 2 eagles yesterday from our kayaks with fish in their claws going to feed their babies. Unbelievable day on the water.
Beautiful lake!! Very large, big enough for any boat yet never overcrowded, so you could even go canoeing on a weekend-just stay closer to shore. The surroundings are nice too-nice beach and great hiking/mountain bike trails.
