This free view of folk art is oddly entertaining. It makes you realize that EVERYONE is capable of art...though it be a bit weird. Many of the he pieces have a religious a d devilish themes, an interesting mix! There are many beautiful pieces and great talent. After you take in all the art, stop by Pen Stattion for the yummiest of steak sandwiches and fries before you hop back on the interstate.
There are a lot of "artsy craftsy" places in eastern KY, but this one, only a few minutes from the more well-known "caves" is worth the stop if your passion is unique expression and "experience" art. I use the word experience advisedly. This art is not developed from art courses and "here's how you do it" lectures, but comes from the artists life experiences and is a real expression of feeling. There are some quality works here. Just because it is primitive (in the sense of grandma moses) doesn't mean it isn't good and can't be understood. These artists speak to you about things that mean something. They are true in the sense of emotion, life, and feelings. Some have very good style, formal correctness, and accurate rendition ... but all have interesting stories to tell.If you read art, and you want to know how it felt to live a life of hardship, wonder, and reward ... then you do yourself a dis-service bypassing this wonderfully constructed collection. Not everyone will be moved, but I was. Just the Nan Phelps and Helen LaFrance did it for me. But there is a lot more awaiting the sensitive observer.
