Not easy for older people, people out of shape or children. A difficult climb down and back up and footwear is needed. Additionally after a jump into the pool it is a rock climb to get back up to the cliff.
Little River Canyon, ALIn northeastern Alabama, the Little River snakes across the top of Lookout Mountain before plummeting into the 12-mile-long Little River Canyon. Bordered by broad-faced cliffs, with large blocks of sandstone jutting from the water, this canyon—at 600 feet, one of the deepest this side of the Mississippi—is home to a handful of perfect swimming holes. Just downstream from the Alabama Highway 35 bridge, follow the boardwalk to the bottom of Little River Falls for an easy-access dunk when water levels are low. (High water means dangerous currents.) Or start at Eberhart Point and hike 0.75 miles to the canyon floor to Hippy Hole, where a series of cliffs serve as springboards for daredevils.—Alice Bruneau
Love the water falls on little river. The park service is adding more and more boardwalk trails to make the views safely accessible. They have also built a new visitor center 1/4 mile west of the falls. :)
I loved it. I've stopped in the Little River Canyon many times, but never knew about these falls. Absolutely beautiful. The river is very scenic at this location. Only +/- 1 mile hike from the Little River Canyon Falls parking lot. The trail follows the canyon rim.
We stumbled onto Marthas Falls, not really knowing what and where we were going. There is a sign pointing to the trail from the Little River Falls parking area. The trail is fairly well marked until near the end, although there are side trails where you can see people have gotten off the trail. Rule of thumb-if it's close to the cliff, it's not the real trail. The trail fades out at a point where it's obvious that a lot of people have gone straight down to the river. This is the right way to go, and is the only strenuous part of the hike. It will take you down to the river where you can walk along the rock formations to the falls. Both the falls and the rock formations are beautiful. When we were there it was too cool to swim, but it looked like an awesome swimming area, and one we'll visit if we are there when it's warm.
