Came here on a guided escorted tour (I probably would not have stopped if I was driving on my own since I did not initially know this place was here). See a recreation of a part of Alaska's transportation history. Before automobiles and highways, you could probably travel only about 25-30 miles per day via coach or horse. There were a series of "roadhouses" with places to sleep and eat. Rika's Roadhouse gives you a view of that past with recreated facilities. Hear the story of how Rika, a Swedish immigrant, came to acquire the roadhouse from the owner, her employer, and then to later expand the roadhouse at the turn of the century. Located on the Richardson Hwy on the way to or from Fairbanks. Can purchase hamburgers, hot dogs, cold sandwiches, salads, chili, soup, drinks, etc. for lunch/break in the restaurant (rest rooms). Arranged cafeteria style. Reasonable prices for Alaska. Small gift shop from local artisans.Spend about one to two hours to adequately look around. No entrance fee to simply look around.Warning: Bring mosquito repellent since this place is next to the Delta River!
Hubby and I took the full loop from Anchorage to Fairbanks this summer, and spotted the park sign on our way down the Richardson Hwy. Never heard of the place so we stopped in to take a look see. What a great area! Rika's is a roadhouse built in the early 1900's by Swedish immigrants, mostly was inhabited by local pioneers and the military. the road has since been rebuilt and the tourist industry has moved on, but the cabins and lodge are now a historical landmark. Complete with campsite (and potty), room for RV's, museum and awesome hiking trails. Costs next to nothing to stay and hardly anyone there. Words of advice; take bear spray when hiking the trails, and food and water. Hiking trails are un-groomed and the restaurant is closed indefinately.
You want to see into Alaska back in the day? Then this is where to go. It's nice to be able to walk around to different buildings to see history. They even have sheep and chickens! If you are in the area it's worth the time to stop by. They also have a few camping spots for 5$ and just down the road there's a RV dump!
You want a true view of Alaska way back when then Rika roadhouse is where you need to be. Walk around the barn, cabins or roadhouse. Take alook at the sheep or chickens! See where the army stayed while building the Alcan highway! Also grab a meal and gift while you are there! Really amazing!
Rika's Roadhouse near Delta Junction, historic house and meeting place for Alaskans since 1904. Old fur trade and guest house run by Rika, a Swedish, it was restored in 1970 and has retained its original charm .... Very good place for a break
Rika's Roadhouse gives you a sense of life way back when. Rika was a real pioneer, suscessfully farming Alaska like no one before her. A lovely location.
Stopped here to take a look around and ended up having lunch after another person raved over how good the soup was. I can't remember what kind it was but it was very good. Perfect for lunch. I also got a good deal on a coat.
Just down the road from me, so we visit now and again when we have guests in town. Nice luncheon, gift shop, and garden...on the river. Little paths take you through old historic buildings with historic notations.
This Historical Park is located a few miles north of Delta Junction on the Richardson Highway. We stopped by intending to eat in the cafe here, but they had closed at 5:00 pm, so no luck. However, it was enjoyable wandering around and looking at all the old buildings. The inside of the original roadhouse is now set up as a museum, and the displays are well presented and interesting. There are a number of outbuildings, including a sod-roofed homestead cabin, barns and the Telegraph Building which is the oldest building in the Delta area. The whole area is pleasant with lawns, big trees and the river. There is a basic RV park there as well. There are no hookups, but the charge is only $5 per night.I had just added this attraction to TripAdvisor and am glad to see there is already one other review for it :-)
This park is definitely worth the stop if you are in the Delta Junction area. Rika's Roadhouse is beautifully restored, along with the surrounding buildings. There are pamphlets available at the entrance that explain what each building is and the history of the location. There is a gift shop and restaurant available at the park as well. Nice view of the river and the pipeline bridge that spans the river.
