Stopped in at the Gilpin just to try a different casino because the machines at the one we were at (The Saratoga) were not being friendly. The machines at the Gilpin were very decent, cocktail service was frequent, and the atmosphere was very enjoyable. Definitely a good place to check out!
The Gilpin has a cheap breakfast for card holders. It was also one of the few casinos we won at. We also enjoyed their $3 blackjack and cold Modelo beer.
When going to black hawk this is my choice in casinos. I love the lucky strike, even though I have never won. It is exciting and fun. The staff are the best at the tables....they are easy to chat with and fun to be around.
Visited recently and picked the place because the exterior of Gilpin Casino (where the restaurant is located) was very attractive. So was the menu. Sprang for the surf and turf. I forgot that filet mignon can end up tasting like liver, which this did. I don't care for liver, so can't blame this on the chef. However, couldn't forgive the 6 oz lobster tail which was limp, flavorless, and almost mushy. Salad bar was pretty fresh but uninspired. The reason I gave this more than one star is that our waiter, Brian, was a gem! Great service and very accommodating. I might add that I hesitated to write this review because I noted several other folks in this restaurant who appeared to be regulars and enjoying their dining experience very much, so in this case, my opinion here may be "off," and the reader can go judge for one's self.
When you visit the Gilpin, please don't miss a meal at Lucille Malone's Restaurant upstairs on the second floor. The food is great and the service is great too! We had lunch, Hamburger & Fries and Shrimp platter. Everything was cooked to perfection and the waitress was so very attentive with drinks and service. This is a top notch place with great employees!
Fun night gone bad! Friend taken up to a private conference room to discuss a gaming issue... She walked up to a machine put in money played for a while won money lost money cashed out at 306. Went to dinner and was phone by gaming about a situation. Went back to get threated by the casino to return the money. Turns out the machine didnt pay the person before her right the machine malfunctioned... Leaving a supposed $330 in the machine to go unnoticed by my first time gambling friend! Threaten jail time... She had to pay not only the 306 back but an additional $40 out of her pocket. Nice customer service will not return!
Some family members and i visited blackhawk to celebrate a birthday. We found our way to gilpin casino, where one in my group sat down at a slot machine and began to play. She was new to casinos and gambling, and started winning immediately. We decided to go get a bite to eat and she cashed out for just over $300! About an hour later she gets a call from someone from gaming control. The return number does not work, so we finish our meal and decide to go back to the Gilpin to find out about the phone call. They take the member of my group away to an undisclosed location without explaining anything to her or the rest of us, and refuse to let any of us go with her to ensure her safety. About 45 minutes later she comes back. They claimed that the machine malfunctioned and when the previous player cashed out they didn't receive their full amount and it stayed on the machine. They forced her to not only give back all of the winnings, but also an extra approximately $40. When she said she wasnt sure if she had another $40 the Gilpin casino manager said she would have to drive home, get the money and bring it back to them! Keep in mind she won money on that machine! Now i understand trying to make things right but that is ridiculous, and due to a problem with their machine! We left that casino confused and they threatened the member of my group and made her feel like some kind of criminal! They took her money and refused to give any kind of proof or explanation as to why that amount was correct. I am blown away at the level these people will stoop to get a few bucks they don't deserve. I understand the name of the game is for them to get our money, but i've never seen anything like this. Needless to say, we will not be retuning to The Gilpin!
Joined Gilpin Slot Club yesterday and what a great party atmosphere we experienced in this casino in Black Hawk! It was a pleasant retrieve from the larger hotel casinos in town. The staff is friendly and accommodating, cupcakes were delicious. Beverages and hors d'oeuvres were offered frequently. We thoroughly enjoyed the perks like 1/2 price lunch, $10 off a future meal, $10 cash back for 500 points that were easy to reach and just the over-all friendliness on the floor and at the service desk. I will definitely return soon.
Cut up floor plan....not a lot to draw you in to play. We walked through but nothing caught our interest to stay longer or play.
I really don’t know how the Gilpin Casino stays in business. I’ve been there a few times and have not won a thing. The thing that really gets me is their ungenerous comp system. Truthfully they have never given me any monetary comps but if you are lucky they might give you a discount on some type of milk beverage. The paper they send their idea of comps out on is expensive but useless. You will receive a real nice folded paper that looks like something expensive but the comps are usually worthless for a serious gambler that evaluates his or her place of participation by comps. You have to park outside and across the street. You have no choice the valet is mandatory. That I was managing this casino I would increase business by making the comp system for knowledgeable gamblers and not fools. If you spend some time there you remember what P.T. Barnum said, “There is a sucker born every minute and I’m one of them.” One thing that crossed my mind is maybe they tell the government they’re sending all kind of money out in comps when in fact they aren’t and claim a phony tax write-off.
